TERRITORIAL PLANNING PLAN WITH A FOCUS
IN ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES OF THE GALAPAGOS SPECIAL REGIME

Year: 2017

Contribution to the conservation of the Galápagos Islands through the land-use planning of the four inhabited islands. This will be reflected in the regulations, and the results will be seen in the long term.

Goals:
Rational and sustainable use of resources.
Protection of natural and cultural heritage.
The Territorial Planning Plan goes hand in hand with the Management of Protected Areas that occupy more than 60% of the territory and has as its main focus the protection of environmental services that are beneficial to the population, after the provision of services generated from natural ecosystems.

The plan classifies the land into:

  • Protected areas: transition, sustainable use, conservation and intangible.

  • Rural land: urban expansion,

  • Sustainable Use, Production and Protection.

  • Urban land: Consolidated, Unconsolidated and Protection.

Allocation of uses according to soil suitability:

  • Intensive urban

  • Residential agricultural

  • Non-renewable natural resources

  • Sustainable production

  • Ecological protection

Food safety:

  • A study of the land's suitability was conducted to promote production in rural areas, and based on this, the land is zoned, thus reducing the dependence of populated islands on the mainland for food, reducing the risks of pests and requiring less logistical management.

Buffer zones are being created to protect the Galapagos National Park from invasive species.
The channels are also dampened to prevent accidents when the water flow increases and, in turn, to protect fresh water from contaminants.
