URBAN DESIGN/ URBAN PLANNING

2017

Description

This project supports the conservation of the Galápagos Islands through territorial planning across the four inhabited islands. Its principles are already reflected in current regulations, with long-term results aimed at ensuring an organized zoning of rural and urban areas, along with their respective land uses.

Territorial planning is the process and outcome of organizing activities and resources spatially and functionally within a territory, enabling the implementation of policies and facilitating the achievement of development goals. Its main objectives are: (1) the rational and sustainable use of territorial resources, (2) the protection of natural and cultural heritage, and (3) the regulation of interventions through the proposal and implementation of norms that guide public policy formulation and execution.

The Galápagos Province is unique, as 96.6% of its land area is designated as National Park, and 100% of the marine area up to 40 miles from the coast is a Marine Reserve. Across its three cantons, which include four inhabited islands, the Territorial Development Plan—established by the regional authority under the Special Regime—must be closely aligned with the management of protected areas, which cover more than 60% of the territory.
